4 Books to Read Aloud

book recommendations, children's books, summer reading | no comments

My almost-four year old daughter has recently discovered the joys of having me read-aloud to her.

And, as a former children’s librarian, I feel like I’ve died and gone to heaven.

I love picture books, but chapter books are my true book love. Finally getting to share that with my child is like magic.

If you’re looking for some suggestions for books to read to your child (especially as summer approaches!), here are four that we’ve loved, that are great for boys and girls alike.

Books to Read Aloud

Written by: Janssen Bradshaw of Everyday Reading

  1. The Mouse and the Motorcycle by Beverly Cleary. If you’re living a boring and dangerous life as a mouse living in a rundown hotel, there’s not much that could be more exciting than discovering a motorcycle just your size. (Also, a ping-pong ball helmet just gets me every time).
  2. Babe the Gallant Pig by Dick King-Smith. This story of a pig who wants to herd sheep like his adopted canine mother. I was reading this to my daughter during a road-trip and when she fell asleep, my husband requested that I keep reading. When you’re done, watch the movie together.
  3. Toys Go Out by Emily Jenkins. This is possibly my favorite book we’ve read together. This series was new to me, but it is darling. Told from the point of view of three toys, it’s just delightful.
  4. Betsy and Billy by Carolyn Haywood. This old-fashioned book about life in first grade is just too sweet. And the illustrations are pitch-perfect. This was the first series that my daughter really loved and launched our chapter-book reading days.

What have you loved reading aloud with your children?

Six YA Books to read before they hit the big screen

I know some readers hate to see their favorite books made into movies – watching someone else’s vision of the characters come to life can be disconcerting! But generally, I love seeing movie version of books I love. It’s so fun to see things that have only existed in my head re-imagined before my eyes. [...]

Logan is positively obsessed with reading these days. He goes through books almost as fast as he goes through socks. Every morning he has a great routine of reading for 30 minutes, sometimes longer when he is so engrossed in a book, before he gets ready for school. As a mom who loves reading, I [...]

I admit it. I’m that person. Who puts holds on library books months before they come out, just to make sure I’m the first one to get my hands on them. Who stalks blogs to read posts about upcoming hot titles. Whose “to-read” list is pages and pages long. That said, here are some of [...]

The Internet is full of suggestions for Halloween books for little ones (and for good reason. There are so many fantastic books for that age!). But what about adults? Shouldn’t we get a few books to read during the month of October that make chills run down our spines? Here are three of my favorite [...]
