If You Liked The Hunger Games: 5 Other Dystopian Novels to Try
This year I’ve been hooked on Young Adult books. Particularly of the dystopian novels variety. Blame it on The Hunger Games. After devouring the trilogy in less than a week, and far too many very late nights I had one thing on my mind: Where can I get more? I want more books like The Hunger Games!
I scoured Goodreads for related titles so I could find a few new dystopian novels to get my hands on. I found a few (summarized below) that sounded promising and checked them out from the library. Here are some of my picks for fans of The Hunger Games. I read a few others, but these were my favorite recommendations of what I’ve read so far.
Luckily, all of these books are the first in a new series with multiple books queued up for publication in the next year or two, so you’ll have plenty to read. I have the sequel to Matched on hold at the library since it just came out this month. Can’t wait till it’s my turn!

In Lena’s world love is a disease. There was a time, before the cure, that people thought love was a good thing. Now they know that a life without love is a life without pain. It is safe, predictably, and happy.
Now that scientists have eradicated love, Lena’s government requires all citizens to receive the cure to deliria before turning eighteen. Lena tries not to think about her mother’s last words to her (the forbidden “I love you”) or the rumors of a community of uncured “invalids” beyond her Portland, Maine, border.
What’s the point? She believes that the government knows what’s best. That is until ninety-five days before receiving the cure, Lena does the unthinkable: She falls in love. Look for part two, entitled Pandemonium, early spring 2012.

Upon turning sixteen, individuals must choose the faction which they will devote their lives. Beatrice “Tris” Prior makes the difficult choice to leave her family’s group and pursue another faction, a choice that surprises even herself.
After surviving the brutal initiation of the Dauntless faction, Tris discovers the brewing unrest and conflict beneath what should be the “perfect society.”

Finally becoming a huntress as she’s dreamed of her whole life, Deuce is caught off guard by a beautiful, brooding Hunter named Fade. Deuce’s troubles are just beginning when the mysterious Fade is assigned as her hunting partner.
Deuce quickly learns that Fade doesn’t like following orders and deviation from the society’s world results in harsh punishment. At first she thinks he’s crazy, but as death stalks their home, and it becomes clear the elders don’t always know best, Deuce wonders if Fade might be telling the truth.

I read The Hunger Games two years ago and I was sad because I thought I wouldn’t find anymore books like that. I heard about Divergent for a whole year and I went to the local library and they have it in the Teen Room that a few other teens and I helped plan. I went in and found Divergent. One week later I read Insurgent in less than 6 hours (finished it on Wednesday of this week). I’m having a Divergent hangover and I have yet to read the new Allegiant. I will also take a look at these few too.

I read the hunger games trilogy and was going through deep deprivation when I finished. Needless to say, I was really searching for another series that would be up to par on the emotional grasp that the HG did, and I believe I found it. I was searching through a site like this which recommended the “Matched” trilogy and they recommended correctly. If you are searching for that same thrill and love triangle that HG gave, this series gives it in a whole different way and I HIGHLY encourage you to read it. You won’t be able to take your eyes away.
Ashley says
I recently read all three HG and the first two of Divergent… I honestly can’t pick a favorite! They are all amazing!! Seriously, I can’t handle the epicness!!! With HG, it’s definitely a bit more drawn out… Suzanne Collins keeps you hanging by a thread till the last pages of Mockingjay, but the ending is decent (but too short!! If you agree, check out the fanfiction “worse games to play” by belmione…. Such a sweet and satisfactory pre-/post-epilogue story of peeta/Katniss). In the divergent series, Veronica Roth barely lets you catch your breath before something huge happens… You will never get bored in this series. So far, she does a great job of resolving relationship things quickly, so it’s not a frustrating as HG in that respect. I highly recommend both!! And I plan on checking out many of the suggestions listed here!! Yay!!
Gina says
I have started reading a lot of the Dystopian-type young adult books. Absolutely loved Divergent and Insurgent and I cannot wait for the next book. I read Matched but it was just ok to me. A little slow. Haven’t decided if I want to read the sequels yet. I just read Exceptional and its sequel Rogue and they were VERY good. Couldn’t put them down! I just went through all the comments and wrote all the books down that everyone mentioned and I can’t wait to read them!
naoko_uuu says
aaah the mortal instruments and the hunger games is my absolute fav book!!!!!!! The hunger games made me wake up from something and made me want to read more!!i also loved divergent and the fault in our stars they are amazing

I have seriously enjoyed my nine months of pregnancy with most of the books mentioned here. Also found a few great suggestions thanks everyone! Going to see how many I can fit in for the last few weeks of being pregnant lol! Most definately have to recommend Julie Kawaga’s Blood of Eden series, dystopian/vampire with a little bit of utopian theme, I wasn’t sure I wanted to read more vampirey things after twilight series but so far in blood of Eden 2 books have been released (blood of eden & the eternity cure) and each one was fantastic she’s a great writer. Read all five or six of her Fairywalker series too, fae fantasy was never on my to read list but they books had ms hooked, haven’t been able to pick up another similar book since though. Please check out Julie Kagawa as a writer overall.
OH!! Almost forgot Andrew Fukuda has two books in his current series, the first is The Hunt, the second is The Prey, also vampirey but more than well worth a read. It’s like hunger games with vampires, I had the prey on ore-order from the day the cover was released last year!
gemma says
After reading the hunger games I was desperate for more! I really enjoyed divergent series by veronica Roth, also matched series by ally condie. The delierium series by Lauren Oliver was also brilliant!
Laura says
The 3rd divergent/insurgent book is coming out october this year π Allegiant is the title I can’t wait they were awsome first two π try Andrew fukuda’s the hunt & the prey, Julie Kawaga’s blood of Eden & the eternity cure xx

I’ve read the hunger games and am REALLY obsessed with it. I’ve read divergent and I want to read matched. Divergent was AMAZING!! If you like the hunger games I can almost gerente you’ll love divergent too. Another amazing book is the host by stephenie Meyer. Don’t be scared by the size. It’s pretty big but it’s so great that I wish it was longer. Also the first few chapters are pretty boring but don’t let it stop you from reading it. It gets sooo good. I’m also going to read beautiful creatures and city of bones. They seem really good.

Andrea says
I loved Hunger Games, but Chaos Walking is the best series IΒ΄ve read. The story is so original and you never know what is the truth.
Jennifer says
I read Chaos Walking a while back too, very original plot, holy cow, that’s some imagination on the authors part. I found it difficult to begin, but was hooked once I caught on to the lingo of the main character. Its a great book, that SHOCKS you with surprises throughout the series.
AmandaR says
Hunger Games was absolutely wonderful and got me hooked on dystopian love stories!!
I read Matched as well and purchased Crossed but I have been putting off reading it because I know the third book does not come out until november and i liked it so much i would hate to wait.
I finished Divergent in a day (as of last night) and am going to Barnes & Noble today for Insurgent because unlike matched, I CANT WAIT!! haha I was completely overcome by this book and hope the 3rd book is released quickly!
My next hit and run is Delirium and I am hoping it is as good as the three ive listed above! I feel like ive read the best books out there already and now anything else will pale in comparison!!
Like i said, Im ALL ABOUT the dystopian society meets love story, where government and independence clash. If you have any other suggestions thatd be great!! I am too hesitant to pick up the uglies because it doesnt really attract me.

Look at my thread! I have read a lot!!! And have some waiting on my nook!!!

I introduced my daughter to Kiki Strike, Gallagher Girls, Kronos Chronicles, Uglies, Divergent/Insurgent. She wasn’t so impressed with the Heist Society, but enjoys the Nicholas Flamel and Percy Jackson stories for highlighting SF and NY.
After expressing my doubts, I let her make her own decision re. Hunger Games — she chose the movie, read Catching Fire, then set them aside to re-read Divergent. Her comment before drifting off one night was, “When my friends are moody, it’s nice to go hang out with Tris.”
We listened to The Apothecary on a car trip, and she was happy to find the book when we got home. As a parent, the Uglies and Divergent/Insurgent made for the best conversations – would love to see more along these lines of thoughtful commentary on society, peers, and choices. (Dystopia is best when there’s room for humor!)
Taunya says
I devoured Hunger Games, and Divergent and Insurgent and cannot believe I have to wait for the last book! To fill the void I read and loved Providence by Jamie McGuire, followed by next 2 in the series Requiem and Eden. Very hard to put down, suspense, action, great love story and unexpected twists in this series. Can’t wait to read as many of the recommendations on here as possible! Thanks!
AmandaR says
You should consider going with Matched next!! Very similar to the 2 you loved!! Im feeling your pain about the third book in the Divergent series!! π
Shaelene Araguz says
Life as We Knew It is an amazing trilogy concering an astroid hitting the moon and sending Miranda’s life spirling out of her usual and normal life. Now she is forced to suvive natrural diasters and food famine while losing friends and holding onto the ones she finds most dear. I couldn’t put the book down, I seriously recommend all three books. Kassie says
The Divergent books are literally the best books I have ever read. I used to think that about Twilight, then Harry Potter took over, then The Hunger Games, but now I think this series is definately my favorite. It is just irritating that the third book hasn’t come out yet, and isn’t coming out until next year, she left a huge gap in the second book and I just want to know what is going to happen!
Christi says
Thank you so much for the suggestions. I read all 3 Hunger Games books in under 2 days and the first 2 Divergent books in less than a day. My local library has an awful time keeping up with my reading and since I have read every YA book they have, the library has started requesting from other cities and even other states.
Jes says
I loved the hunger games! Ship Breaker is another book close to hunger games.

I just finished the last book of the hunger games and I must say it has taken over my brain. Cried so hard at the end of mocking jay! The movie was terrible compared to the book but I’m glad it’s gotten so popular because now more people will check out the books. I’m 32 by the way, a mom and career woman but these young adult books will stay with me forever. Thanks for the recommendations I will try them out. Oh love and loss and the horrors of war, thank you Hunger Games.
Kim says
I highly recommend “The Uglies” series. I loved Divergent & Insurgent, Hunger Games, Birthmarked and Prized, Empty, Matched & Crossed, and many other books and I am currently hooked on “The Uglies.”
Amanda says
The books I have read so far:
The Hunger Games Trilogy- great books although Katniss frustrates me. Loved Peeta though!! Well written and it stays interesting up until the third book… I forced myself to read that book only to see who she ended up with!
Divergent & Insurgent- LOVE it!!! Trus & Tobias “four” are amazing! For once I don’t dislike the female character!!! Great love story and action!!!!! Can’t wait for book 3 next year π
Wither & Fever- I enjoyed it a lot too … The idea is so weird but interesting!! I’m looking foward to the final book for the ending!!
Delirium & Pandemonium- Love them too!! The ending of the 2nd book really left me mad… Really I don’t want to wait a year to find out who she picks π tell me now!!!!
Matched & Crossed- great concept and matched was great but crossed felt like a filler book. Looking foward to the last for the ending!
The Maze Runner- this book gives me a headache so I stopped reading it. Your constantly trying to figure out whose talking and what’s going on. I wouldn’t recommend.
Does anyone have any other suggestions on good ya dystopian books?! I need a new one!!!
Kim says
Try “The Uglies” quartet. I like all the ones you said and am HOOKED on The Uglies right now.
Wallywork says
I absolutely loved the Hunger Games with Peeta and all that jazz. But Divergent got me hooked. I read that book in no time. I was crazed wondering what will happen to Tris and Tobias “Four” through the perils of the 5 factions. I read Insurgent and it was a good book, I will admit some parts were a little hard to understand. I really like how Tris and Tobias are still together. It’s nice to have a couple that will hopefully have no other people involved. Life is in shambles, so lets hope it doesn’t involve another love interest.
Matched: was extremely boring and unrealistic. There was no desire to read into Ky and Cassia’s journey. It was them just hiking and that’s it.
The Maze Runner: Was terribly written, at least I thought. I couldn’t understand who was talking and what exactly was going on. A cool idea but not well preformed.
Delerium and Pandemonium: Delerium was way better than Pandemonium but Pandemoniums ending was cray cray!
I’ve read the Giver, and that was alright.
Any other good suggestions?
Kim says
Empty is a good one, a little scary to think it could happen.
You won’t be disappointed with Insurgent (Follow-up to Divergent).
I enjoyed Birthmarked (and it’s follow-up Prized).
Happy Reading!
Kassie says
I have a feeling that someone else will show up in the third book of the Divergent series, I just have a feeling, but it will make me SO upset! I love the love story and having someone else ruin it would ruin the whole book!

Divergent beats the Hunger games in so many ways!!!! I mean, I still love te hunger games, but really? Calling people lucky to be able to go to the Capitol to kill a bunch of other kids that are probably younger than you? That is really weird, you have to admit! I really want to play the part of tris in the newest movie!!!!!!!
falicia says
Divergent is wwwwwwwwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyy better than the hunger games!
Jennifer says
I TOTALLY agree, although I did fall for Peeta too, lol!

Amanda says
Divergent has a great romance story in it as well as delirium!!!
Thuy says
I loved the hunger games. I also loved the Birthmarked series. It’s very similar to the hunger games. Divergent was good and matched was good also. I am looking forward to reading some of the books you guys have recommened. But I loved the birthmarked series as much as the hunger games! IT was a very good read, I was hooked and I can’t wait till the next book comes out!
Sanne says
Next to the Hunger Games series, I also love the Gone series. And I’ve read some Dutch dystopian novels too (too bad they’re not translated in English, cause they’re really good), but if you understand Dutch you should definitely read ‘Koepels’ by MariΓ«tte Aerts and ‘Sequioa’ by Kirsten Vanlierde (or start spamming some book publishers asking to get them translated)
Yvette says
If you loved The Hunger Games and you love dystopian, you should read Unwind. It’s the most chilling read I’ve read in a while. Gave me goosebumps.
Kristen says
I would definitely recommend “Legend” by Marie Lu.
Katie says
Good to know, I just checked that out from the library! Haven’t started it yet though.
Lauren says
Great suggestions! One of my best friends and I have just finished Delirium and it was fantastic. We can’t wait for the second book to be released.
Christina says
I have most of these waiting for me on my Kindle! I have read Incarceron and it was pretty good. Have not had a chance to read The Hunger Games (gasp!) its next on my download list!
Jamie Cooks It Up! says
Thanks for the great list, Katie. Loved the Hunger Games and Matched. Just put the others on hold at the library. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
Anna says
I’ve been hearing a lot about Divergent… I will have to check it out! I really love young adult fiction as well, and I am actually into the Twilight books series as too…:) Thanks for the list!
Sarah says
Oooh, we have the same book taste. I also love YA books. I really enjoyed The Hunger Games, Divergent, and Enclave (except the names….like Stalker?!)
I just finished Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor. Really cool book. Not totally dystopian – more fantasy – but have you read Graceling by Kristin Cashore? I really liked that book as well.
Katie says
I really liked Graceling, too! I hear she’s supposed to write another book called Bitterblue but no idea when it is going to come out.
Tickled Red says
Thanks for the good read tips! patch will be thrilled π
Mercedes says
I have only read book one of the Hunger Games, but I can’t wait to read the other two (gosh I hope the movie does the books justice) I have only heard of Divergent before, and currently have it in my books to read pile. I think I may have to add Matched to the pile too!
Saleta says
So great! Thanks for posting these. I just finished the first book of The Hunger Games a few minutes ago and I’m starting the 2nd one tonight. Looking forward to picking up a few of these as well. π
angela says
I heard of the Hunger Games, but thought it might be too disturbing. I get affected easily by things, but now I”m wondering if I should give it a try.
Debs says
Its a really great book, which is why I hate ever knowing it. It was such a great series that I was so so sad after reading Mockingjay, because it had become a part of me. You can read it if you want, but it is just to great to put down. And you’ll be pretty depressed after wards.
Kendra says
You must have recommended some good books because all of them or either on hold at the library with a crazy long list or they were never returned. Soooo… I might just have a snag a little Christmas money and pull the trigger and buy some. And I’m pretty much obsessed with The Hunger Games. Like, I can’t tell my husband, but I want to marry Peeta. Yesterday. So thanks for the recommendations so I can move away from my fictional husband. My real one will appreciate it.
Everyday Art says
Oh yes, I forgot about how I fell in love with Peeta too. Since then I took a break from YA books and read Pride and Prejudice and am now maddly in love with Mr. Darcy. π I too need something to move away from my fictional heart-throb.
Kerstin says
I just finished the hunger games series and will definitely check some of these out – thanks for the recommendations!
Kait says
Divergent is probably the best book I’ve read (and re-read) this year! Mind you, I read The Hunger Games trilogy last year :p I cannot wait for Insurgent to be released!
Delirium is an extremely powerful story that left me with the ache in the end. So good! Matched was also very enjoyable, though the pace was a little slow.
Vanderbilt Wife says
I just finished reading The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood. It’s not really young adult, although I know it’s been on some high-school curricula. But it really fits in with this list and I would highly recommend it!
Mandi @ Life...Your Way says
I kind of wish I had never read this list! I devoured The Hunger Games in under a week too, and it killed my productivity. I want to read it again, but now I have to add all of these to my list too!
Mandi @ Life...Your Way says
P.S. The Divergent link goes to Delirium instead. π
Katie says
Thanks for letting me know, Mandi!
Brianne says
I love the hunger games. Other good reads include uglies series and glow. I also couldn’t put down matched.
Danae (The Busty Baker) says
I loved Divergent! I work at a bookstore, and I currently have it as my staff recommendation! Delirium was really good too and reminded me a lot of the Uglies series by Scott Westerfeld (another good dystopian series). I’ve heard really good things about Matched and had Wither on my list, but I’m definitely checking out Enclave now! Thanks for the suggestions!
Rebecca S. says
The Giver is always a classic dystopia.
Katie says
For sure! I’ve read it at least 5 times, plus the companion books: Gathering Blue and Messenger.
Jimi says
I am excited to add these to my list. I loved Divergent and The HungerGames, and have Matched on my night stand right now. Have you tried the Uglies series by Scott Westerfeld?
Katie says
Not yet but I have that one my list!

I am a teacher and devoured those books quicker than my students did. I can’t wait to check out your suggestions– THANK YOU!
Tracy says
Great suggestions Katie! I’ll have to check these out!

YA books are great, 90% of the books I read end up being YA! However there is an adult series called Poison Study, by Maria V. Snyder. This series was recommended to me by multiple people who said if you like Hunger Games you will like this, very true, I love them.
sara says
Ooooh, thanks for the recommendation – I haven’t heard of that one but the review on Amazon sounds great – will have to give a try! π

I have a good many of these books already on my to read list!
It’s good to know I’m not the only grown up who enjoys the young adult books. Sometimes I feel a bit silly checking them out at the library!
Katie says
Almost all of the books I’ve read this year have been YA books. I love that usually they are faced paced and exciting, plus easy reads. Sometimes I want to read a book that doesn’t require much work on my part.

I also loved Incarceron. I’ve read the first 2, not sure if the third is out yet. It’s so confusing and you don’t really understand much when you first start reading, but once I got into it, I couldn’t put it down!

Thanks for the reccs! I loved the Hunger Games, and also really enjoyed Matched and Wither, so I’ll have to check out these other ones on your list! Another one you might enjoy (not really dystopian, but it has a somewhat similar feel to many of the books on this list with more of a fantasy feel than a sci fi feel) is Daughter of Smoke and Bone.
Katie says
Thanks, I will have to check that one out. I love sci-fi and fantasy.

The Gone series is also excellent!

I loved the Hunger Games and have yet to find a book that compares to it. I have read the Maze Runner series which was good on its own standing and Divergent still waiting for that sequel. Thanks for the suggestions…I am going to try my hand at a couple. I recently came across a few more titles such as The Line by Teri Hall.

I still haven’t read The Hunger Games but I’m going to get my hands on it soon. Thanks for all these recommendations, I added them to my goodreads. π

Also another one I heard that compares to The Hunger Games (which I’m a huge fan of and I’ve all 3 books read twice already ) is The Maze Runner I just bought the first two and there is a third that came out recently and I heard another good one is The City of Bones but I can’t wait to start The Maze Runner it sounds really good!
Katie says
I liked The Maze Runner too. I just got the second one from the library but haven’t read much of it yet.
Anna says
City of bones is amazing:)

I bought Matched at the school book fair a few weeks ago but haven’t read it yet. Kiera loves The Hunger Games, so I thought she’d like it. Now I’m excited there’s a sequel. In fact, I just told her she has to ready it next (she’s currently reading Power of Six) so I can get the sequel, too.
Katie says
I read I am Number Four but I haven’t read the others in that series yet. We actually watched the movie first and I didn’t like the book quite as much as the movie. That surprised me because it’s usually the other way around. How is she liking Power of Six?
Shaina says
She has been enjoying it. I asked her to list her favorite books, though, and The Hunger Games came first. π
